I have owned a Canon EOS 5D for the last year or so. It was a replacement for my Canon 350D which I’d owned since 2005 until it was stolen, along with a 17-40mm f4.0L IS and a 70-200mm f4.0L IS. And a three week-old 40″ Bravia. I had been looking for an excuse to make the move to a 5D for some time; I was finding the 1.6x cropped of the 350D a little restrictive, and I was keen to get back to full-frame 35mm equivalence. My insurance company was very good about the whole thing, and Canon was running a promo on the 5D - discounted body, plus a 24-105mm f4.0L IS and a EX430 Speedlite. So I bought one.

I’ve been extremely happy with it and taken a few thousand frames in the 12 months that I’ve had it. The 5D was released in 2005 (around the same time my original 350D was released, in fact), and it had been the only realistically priced full-frame body on the market for a while - the only other full-frame Canon was the 5-figure EOS 1Ds - despite being a relative old-timer by the time I picked mine up, it still more that stacked up against other offerings such as the Nikon D3. As I said, I’ve been extremely happy with it.

Canon has, however, just announced the replacement for the 5D - the 5D Mark II.

I’m liking the sound of it so far. Some headline specifications:

- 21.1 megapixel full-frame sensor.

- DIGIC4 processor (the original 5D uses a DIGIC2 processor).

- ISO expandable up to 25600 (!), or 6400 for low-light handheld shooting.

- 3.0″ LCD.

- Full 1080p HD video recording (!).

The Canon Europe website has a brief datasheet online: http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_5D_Mark_II/index.asp. And dpreview.com has a hands-on review of a beta unit up as well, with a raft of (huge) sample images.

Apparently it’s due to hit stores in November, and the list pricing will be US$2,699, EUR 2,499, or GBP 2,299. Interestingly, I’m going to be in London in November - although by the looks of it it’ll be cheaper for me to take a day trip to Paris and buy it there…

Also - the hard drive on my Macbook Pro has been filling up at a pretty rapid pace since upgrading from the 8MP 350D to the 12MP 5D - happily, Apple is slated to release new versions of it’s laptops in November as well…
