apple has today released a new beta version of safari 4. new features - “top sites”, similar to google chromes splash page which shows a thumbnail of the most frequently-access pages; a coverflow mode for navigating bookmarks; a fairly hideous redesign of the tabs interface; updated address field which implements a few features again clearly inspired by chrome.

its a pretty nice update; one of the biggest things for me personally is that control-tab switches between browser tabs; as it does in firefox. this didn’t work in safari three. i also switch between macos and vista (i use a unibody macbook pro), so use foxmarks for safari to keep things synchronised - this seems to work with the beta no problems.

some tweaks can be make to the default look and feel if the new features don’t quite do it for you.

the beta can be downloaded from the link above - it’s delivered locally, so should come down pretty quickly if you’re on the orcon network. it’s about 30mb. there’s a good writeup of some of the new ui changes and web development enhancements (including HTML 5 support) here.
